Believe it or not, thousands of men suffer from eating disorders.

It is a common misperception that adolescent binge eating disorder treatment centers only cater to female patients. Many people do not realize that this disorder affects males as well as females. According to the National Eating Disorder Association or NEDA, “millions of men and boys” struggle with binge eating disorder. In order to dispel this gender myth, we must first examine what a binge eating disorder is and how one can go about treating it. In males, a binge eating disorder is characterized by periodic instances of extreme over-eating and binging. Typically males with adolescent binge eating disorder do not “purge” to prevent weight gain. Many times these disorders develop when adolescents need to maintain a certain weight or body image for a sport or other extracurricular activity. But unhealthy habits are difficult to curb, and these can spiral out of control.
